Dear customer,
The Postal Company and EMS employees in Israel and the destination country are doing their best to transfer and deliver your products to the addressee as best as possible, but it is your responsibility to pack your item properly. If the packing is inappropriate, the item and its contents may become damaged. The item is to be packed in such a way as to protect its contents from loss or damage, and the packing must not damage other items or the employees handling your item.
The Postal Company shall not be in any way liable for the packing suggestions it provides. Customers bear full responsibility to ensure the item’s packing is appropriate for shipping overseas.
The following are several guidelines that will assist you when packing your item:
It is important to keep in mind Postal Company employees as well as customs employees in Israel and around the world are permitted to examine the item’s contents, for purposes of security, customs etc. Therefore, do not seal the item’s contents in such a way that would prevent access.
Packing Guidelines
*Choose packing appropriate for the contents.
*It is important to properly line the item’s contents.
*Remember – an item which is not full may cave in. An item which is too full may burst and tear, allowing access or loss of the contents.
*When selecting packing materials, please take into consideration the material’s strength and your item’s contents.
*Packing should be as new as possible.
*When using old packing, please remove any mark / sticker / writing which may be misleading.
*Use filling materials to line the contents so as to prevent shifting.
*Pack each item separately and ensure fragile items are separated.
*Place fragile items in the center of the parcel. Ensure it does not touch the sides of the parcel, and line the item well with bubble wrapping or Styrofoam bits on all sides including the bottom.
*Connect cardboard pieces to sharp or protruding ends in your contents.
*Use strong adhesive tape designed for shipping (it is recommended to close the box with 6 strips that exceed the edge of the box by approximately 6 centimeters).
*Do not use office type adhesive tape or packing paper.
*Do not use packing or bags made of cloth or fabric.
*Do not count on “fragile” labels as a replacement for packing appropriate for shipping. The various labels / stickers are for information only.
*Do not connect several parcels together if not using an additional external parcel (main packing).
*In addition to the item label, add a sticker with details of the addressee and sender in legible English letters.
Envelopes
*Anything that can be put inside an EMS envelope must be packed in such a way as not to damage your contents. Example: use a lined envelope and put that inside the EMS envelope. Using such an envelope will facilitate quick handling of your item.
Fliers and Documents
*Pack in paper and put into a right sized box. If possible, use an EMS envelope.
Parcels / Boxes
*Items that are too big for an EMS envelope should be packed based on their contents.
*In addition to the item label, parcels will be marked with an EMS marking sticker for the parcel’s identification as an EMS item.
*Item contents which are sensitive to damage require double checking of the packing to ensure it can withstand the shakes and jerks expected on the item’s long way to its destination.
Liquid Materials
*Pack liquids in sealed containers. Line their surroundings with absorbent materials and seal with a plastic bag. Then put everything inside a wooden crate and label it boldly as “LIQUIDS”.
*Semi liquids, fats or substances with strong odors must be sealed with adhesive tape and then put inside fat repelling paper.
*Always remember that poor packing may lead to damage to surrounding items.
Sharp Items
*Scissors, knives etc. are permitted for shipment as long as sharp edges are well protected. Thick cardboard can be useful for this purpose. Ensure to connect or glue on the protective piece properly, so as not to be accidentally removed, to prevent injury to people and/or other items.
Powders and Seeds
*Flour, coffee, legumes etc. are to be packed in separate plastic bags for each item. The plastic bags should be well sealed and packed inside rigid packing.
Books and Booklets
*Cover books with additional packing so as to protect corners. Do not leave gaps between the book and the external packing.
Fragile / Breakable Products
*Items containing CDs, paintings, fragile devices, small electronic components or any other breakable material must be packed in lined packages using filling material. In such a way they will not be damaged by the shakes and jerks expected on the way, and no damage will be caused to other parcels or to the employees handling them. Such envelopes are available at the postal units. Additionally, the sender must mark the items with “attention – fragile”.
Electrical and Electronic Products
*This includes televisions, stereo systems, DVD devices, VCRs, computer sets, fax sets etc. Please do not connect several products with holders, strings, etc. Instead, pack each appliance in separate packing that was designed specifically for such items. Items must be protected with Styrofoam and/or other protections contained in their original box provided by the factory.
Lining Materials
The following are some of the lining materials that can be used to improve the protection provided to a product sent overseas:
*Packing paper: wrinkling the paper and placing it between the product and its external packing can assist in lining and prevent shifting and impacts.
*Bubble wrapping: This type of packing material consists of air bubbles trapped within two polymer sheets. The bubbles help line the contents and prevent shifting and impacts.
*Styrofoam balls: Styrofoam balls come in several shapes and can be used to fill gaps between the product and its packing or within the product itself.
*Internal packing: These are made of various foams specifically for your product type.
*Foam:Foams are available which expand (inflate) when exposed to air. They can be sprayed between the product and its external packing or among several internal items.
Wooden Packing
*All wooden packing surfaces shipped to the US must undergo disinfection, and then be marked with an international logo showing a proper disinfection process did in fact take place. Such international marking must be visible on both sides. If the marking does not meet the stringent requirements of American customs, the importer / exporter may be required to bear heavy expenses which may obligate him / her to return the goods to Israel.
*· Contents must be packed inside a rigid cardboard unit. The item must be covered with plastic bags in order to prevent scratches and possible damage to the sides. Additionally, double sides must be placed in each corner. Ensure corners are properly protected and that no splinters or sharp points exist that can injure the people handling the crate. Sometimes, a crate from very thick double layered cardboard can be used as a less costly alternative to a wooden crate.
Plastic sheets are good for protection against dirt, water, oil etc. When such sheets are used, labels must be used on the boxes as well as the sheets.
Bands are an ideal way to reinforce the packing for shipping. Loose bands are useless, but when they are too tight they can cut the box and damage it. Edge protectors can be used when using bands, as they prevent damage to your shipment by distributing pressure uniformly along the box’s edges.
Is the Cardboard Strong Enough?
The following chart will assist you in selecting cardboard strength. The term “gsm” is a standard measurement for paper and cardboard.
Less than 3 kg200 gsm
3 - 7 kg300 gsm
7 - 10 kg150 gsm (double sides)
10 - 15 kg200 gsm (double sides)
