YAMAM - Elite Counter-Terrorism Unit Established in 1974 YAMAM is an elite unit specialized in handling extreme events. Subordinate to the Israel Police and the Border Police, it also serves as a tactical operational arm for the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and other security and intelligence agencies in Israel. The unit integrates unique capabilities and means for hostage rescue, counterterrorism, and serious crime operations. Over the past decades, YAMAM has carried out the majority special operations to thwart terrorism in the West Bank, arresting thousands of terrorists, including key infrastructure leaders and "ticking bombs" (suicide bombers on their way to carry out attacks). YAMAM is considered one of the top five units globally in its field and serves as a model for similar units worldwide. On January 2, 2022 (29th of Tevet, 5782), following a government decision, YAMAM was officially designated as the "National Unit for Hostage Rescue and Counterterrorism". In November 2022, the unit was awarded the Chief of Staff’s Citation for the first time due to its complex operational achievements that were of paramount importance to national security. Foundation Stone – Human Capital The unit has a unique system of selection, training, and exercises tailored to its nature. Candidates for the course are graduates of special units with a command background. Only about one percent will successfully complete the rigorous and challenging fighter course.
